Invisalign – Invisible Braces

Invisible Orthodontic Solutions

No matter your age, there is never a wrong time to consider looking into available orthodontic solutions. The traditional method of braces includes metal wires that are very visible. This is unlikely to be a solution that appeals to most patients. In years gone by, the best way to treat misaligned teeth was to use the traditional metal braces. Not only can they sometimes be uncomfortable for the patient but they can also have an impact on the overall lifestyle of the wearer.

It can’t be denied that traditional braces are conspicuous. They can lead to a reluctance to seek out orthodontic solutions. For patients interested in a much more discreet option for braces, with much more flexibility, there is the Invisalign system. Invisalign braces are a clear alternative to traditional metal braces.

    Invisalign - Invisible Braces

    What are Invisalign braces?

Invisalign braces are an innovative orthodontic option that allows dentists to treat patients who have misaligned teeth, without needing to rely on very visible/metal braces/orthodontic systems. The Invisalign clear trays work by applying steady but gentle pressure to each of the teeth slated for repositioning. The teeth will move gradually in response to this steady gentle pressure.

Traditional metal brackets and wires are affixed to the teeth. Once they have been set in place, they can only be removed by the dentist. These braces often require dietary changes, and also some lifestyle changes.

The Invisalign braces system makes use of a set of clear retainers, also known as aligner trays. These trays can be removed by the patient when it’s time to eat or brush and floss.

Each of the aligner trays in the series makes very small and very gradual adjustments to the teeth. After a few weeks of wear, the aligner trays are switched out to the next in the series. This will continue until the teeth have been moved into the desired position.
One of the aspects of the Invisalign system that patients enjoy most is that the retainers are practically invisible when they are in place.

What concerns can Invisalign braces treat?

Invisalign braces have been designed to treat a number of cosmetic orthodontic concerns. It’s important to note that some patients may require some restorative work prior to getting fitted with their clear retainers. Cavities will need to be treated and any root canal therapy that is needed will need to be done prior to straightening the teeth.

What other orthodontic options are there?

There are several orthodontic solutions that we can offer at Fingerpost Dental. The best way to decide which one will be the best choice for your orthodontic goals is to discuss your concerns with your orthodontics when you sit down for a consultation.

Traditional braces are very effective at achieving results. The Six Month Smile system is also very good at helping to realign teeth.

Your general oral health will help to determine which orthodontic solution is best for you. It will also be based upon the amount of realigning that is needed.
In situations where there is overcrowding, some patients may require that their wisdom teeth are extracted.

What is the Invisalign fitting procedure like?

Once any restorative dental work has been completed, your teeth will now be ready to be fitted with your Invisalign aligner trays. Your dentist will take Impressions and images of your teeth in order to create a treatment plan using the Invisalign system.

Each tray will be slightly different from the previous tray, and will need to be worn for several weeks at a time. You will then need to switch to using the next retainer tray in the series.

With steady and gradual pressure applied by the clear retainers, your teeth will start to slowly move into the desired position.

What are the advantages of Invisalign?

While Invisalign braces can often take longer to move teeth into the desired position, they are all but invisible once worn. This allows patients the ability to get straightened teeth, discreetly.

It can prove to be difficult to effectively brush and floss your teeth when you are wearing traditional braces. The Invisalign trays can be removed when it’s time to take care of your oral health routine. Once you’ve brushed and flossed, you can simply pop the aligner tray back in.

Another clear benefit of the aligner trays is that they can be taken out when it’s time to eat some of your favourite foods. Other braces systems require that patients avoid overly chewy or sticky foods. Chewing gums and toffees can stick to the components of the braces and potentially cause damage.

Some orthodontic solutions require that patients avoid their favourite sports and outdoor activities unless they are wearing a mouth guard. Invisalign braces don’t require any lifestyle changes.
