Dental Crowns

Tooth crowns

Tooth crowns offer protection for teeth that have been repaired. Whether as the result of chipping, cracking or decay, teeth that have been repaired or have undergone some type of trauma will need to be protected from exposure to additional damage and decay.

Dental crowns look beautifully natural and offer the same strength expected from natural teeth.

  • Informed patients are patients that make the right decisions for their cosmetic and medical needs.
  • At Fingerpost Dental we ensure that our patients are armed with all of the information needed to make sound personal decisions.

Tooth Crown

What is a tooth crown?

This of a tooth crown as a cap that fits over the natural tooth after it has been repaired. Whether the repairs treated damage or severe decay, the tooth cap will offer protection to the natural tooth.

Beyond helping to stabilise compromised teeth, crowns can help patients get an even and straight smile. Misshapen teeth and discoloured teeth can have crowns affixed, to provide better aesthetics.

Crowns restore normal function to damaged teeth. They can also be used to help strengthen healthy teeth that are being used to anchor dental bridges and dentures.

With the latest in dental technology, today’s tooth crowns offer a wholly natural look that will ensure that they are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Where are crowns best used?

A tooth crown is the best choice to provide protection for one or more teeth that have gone through repair and restoration. Perhaps you’ve undergone a chipped tooth repair? Chipped or cracked tooth repair will help to keep the tooth from being susceptible to decay, but will not protect the tooth from further damage.

Perhaps you’ve had to have a root canal treatment on a tooth? Whether a front tooth crown or protection for a molar, tooth caps will preserve and protect the natural tooth while also restoring functionality.

What types of crowns are available?

There are a number of types of crowns available. The type that is best for you will depend largely on where the crown will be placed, and on the reason for needing a crown.

The crown that is most commonly used is made of porcelain that has been fused to metal. These are ultra-strong crowns that can stand up to the forced of chewing. The metal base offers the strength that is needed, while the porcelain provides patients with that natural look that they want.

Process Of Getting a Crown on a Tooth

Patients should feel no pain during the fitting procedure.

Prior to being fitted with a crown, it’s important to keep in mind that if there is any decay or damage to the tooth it should be repaired prior to the crown being placed. Your dentist will discuss your options with you, so that you can create a treatment plan that is ideal to meet your needs.
Chipped or cracked teeth do not generally take very long to repair. Root canal therapy may take a little bit longer. Once the teeth have been repaired, an impression will be made of the tooth. This impression will help to ensure that your new crown fits perfectly, offers a natural look and helps to keep your bite in line.

A temporary crown will be placed over the repaired tooth to protect it until your permanent tooth has been completed. Keep in mind that these temporary crowns are not designed to permanent solutions, and they will not give you the durability that you need in order to protect your tooth.

When the permanent crown has been milled, you’ll return to the clinic for the fitting. Your dentist will make small adjustments if they are needed to ensure you have a comfortable and natural bite. The crown will then be bonded to your natural tooth.

What are the advantages of getting crowns?

The best advantage to getting a tooth crown is that it will offer protection for your repaired teeth, while also restoring functionality. Crowns will restore your smile, protect your teeth and keep you smiling.

With proper care and continuing dental check ups, a tooth cap can last a lifetime. It’s important to note that crowns can sustain damage just like your natural teeth can. Any crowns that do sustain damage should be seen by your dentist in order to keep the potential for decay at bay.
