Dental Bridges

Dental Bridge

There are many number of reasons for the loss of one or more teeth. Advanced decay that necessitated an extraction or an injury that left the tooth damaged beyond repair are just two reasons that patients may find themselves with gaps between healthy teeth.

Those who lose teeth that don’t have an immediate impact on their smile may simply opt to ignore the gap that has now been left behind. Losing teeth, even molars, can have an impact on more than just your smile.

  • The loss can have an impact on your bite and ultimately lead to the potential for damage to your other teeth.
  • A tooth bridge can help to relieve some of the concerns that are faced by missing one or more teeth.

Bridge

What is a bridge?

Missing teeth leave behind gaps between otherwise healthy teeth. Dental implants are often a good solution for replacing these teeth, but they are not the ideal option for all patients.

Considering a dental bridge vs. implant solution, the needs of each patient will be taken into consideration. The dental bridge cost is often lower than the costs seen with implants.

A dental bridge prosthetic provides a bridge for the gap between those healthy teeth. They are affixed to the otherwise healthy teeth, or to a crown. Your fixed dental bridge will restore your ability to chew on that side. I can also help to stave off those other concerns that can become a reality if you have gaps in your smile.

Bridges are made from Zirconia, porcelain and porcelain fused to metal. The type that works best for you will depend on factors unique to you.

What conditions can bridges treat?

A dental bridge is a prosthetic that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. A fixed bridge dental solution will restore both your smile and your bite. It can also help to keep your otherwise healthy teeth from shifting into the gap that has been left behind by the lost teeth.

Temporary dental bridges are a good option to consider using before an implant is considered, or while waiting for your permanent bridge to be milled.

If you are missing more than a few teeth, and your remaining teeth are not in good health, then you may be a better candidate for dentures.

    Dental Bridge Treatment Process

The amount of work needed will vary between patients. If there are healthy teeth surrounding the gap, then they may need to have a bit of prep work done. These teeth may need to be fitted with a crown in order to ensure they are stable enough to support the bridge.

If there aren’t sufficiently healthy teeth to offer support, then dental implants may an option for you to consider. Patients with many missing teeth can often benefit from just one or two implants, to serve as an anchor for the bridge itself.

Once any and all preparation has been done, your dentist will take an impression of your healthy teeth. This impression will be sent off to a laboratory specializing in producing comfortable-fitting bridges that offer a wholly natural look.
A temporary dental bridge may be used for aesthetic reasons, until your permanent bridge is ready.

When the permanent prosthetic is ready, your dentist will set it in place. It will be permanently bonded to your teeth or to the implants.

What are the advantages to bridges?

A tooth bridge can help to restore your smile, while also improving your overall bite.

Bridges can help to ensure that your healthy teeth remain healthy and don’t shift into the empty gaps left by missing teeth. When these teeth do move, they can often create a number of issues that can be easily prevented.

A well-made dental bridge can provide you with up to a decade of reliable wear. Be sure that you take care of your tooth bridge and keep up with your annual checkups so that your dentist can inspect your prosthetic for any damage.
