Veneers

What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin shells that are made from a composite material or from porcelain. They are made specifically to fit each tooth that they are bonded to. Once the veneers have been bonded, they offer a beautifully natural look. They also offer the very same strength that you’d expect from a natural tooth, which means that they won’t have an impact on the way that you eat and chew.

The type of veneers that you opt for will depend on your reasons for wanting veneers and on a number of other factors that you will discuss with your dentist.

What veneers be used to treat?

Dental veneers are used on teeth that are healthy, and otherwise free from decay and damage. They are not a replacement for dental fillings or crowns.

Teeth that have spaces between them or perhaps are cracked and chipped can be restored with veneers that will be shaded to match your natural teeth. Keep in mind that it’s important these teeth are not in any immediate of further decay or damage.

Teeth that have been discoloured or damaged from patients grinding their teeth can also be restored beautifully.

What are the options in dental veneers?

Patients can select between porcelain veneers and direct composite veneers. There are distinct advantages to each type of veneer, so your decision will be based upon your oral health goals and the budget that you are working with.

The primary advantage of porcelain veneers over other types of veneers is that they offer more by way of longevity. While composite veneers do offer the strength and durability that you are looking for, they cannot match what is offered by their porcelain counterparts.

In general, composite veneers last just a few years. They will need to be replaced at that point. Porcelain veneers can last for many more years, which is something to consider when researching your options.

    Is the veneers procedure complicated?

The procedure is not at all complicated. While the veneers themselves can typically be placed in one visit, patients will need to visit the clinic prior to getting the veneers fitted.

During the first appointment, patients will consult with their dentist and learn more about each of the options that are available to them. The treatment will then be planned, contingent upon any other dental work that may be needed.

Patients quite often elect to have a professional cleaning done on their teeth prior to having the veneers bonded in place. This will help to ensure that there is no lingering tartar or evidence of gum disease. Keep in mind that veneers can only be placed on healthy teeth that are free from cavities or other decay and damage.

    The process for getting veneers

The process for getting veneers begins with diagnostics. This could include X-rays, as well as intraoral and extra-oral images of your teeth. These images determine the right fit and placement for each of the veneers.

To prepare teeth for veneers, teeth will be lightly buffed in order to remove an approximate half a millimetre of the tooth. You may be offered a local anaesthetic in order to ensure your comfort levels are maintained.

If you are getting composite veneers, with the tooth prepared, your dentist will bond and sculpt the composite material onto your teeth. Any excess materials will be removed, and the veneer will be polished so that it looks perfect.

If you are opting for porcelain veneers, a mould is taken of your teeth. This mould will be sent off to the laboratory so that the veneers can be made. Temporary veneers will be bonded to your teeth in the interim.

Once ready, your dentist will set each veneer in place to ensure that they fit well. Your veneers should fit perfectly, feel completely comfortable once in place, and of course look beautifully natural.

The colour of the veneers can be adjusted as needed before they are bonded to your teeth. Once you are satisfied with the colour, each tooth will be cleaned and the veneer will be bonded with a dental cement. The cement will be cured using a light.
